Overview

Two of Stravinsky's sharpest scores in one disc, played by the orchestra of the house where his career began. Petrushka appears here in its 1911 original version — the bigger, brasher scoring, before Stravinsky thinned it down in 1947. Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra lean into the fairground colour and the puppet's tragedy without softening either.

Jeu de cartes, the 1937 "ballet in three deals," fills out the program. It's Stravinsky in his neoclassical mode: lean, witty, full of card-game gamesmanship and sly quotations. The contrast with Petrushka's Russian carnival is the point — the same composer, two decades and one aesthetic apart.

Recorded in DSD in the Mariinsky's own concert hall, the disc carries high-definition stereo and surround tracks for SACD players while reading cleanly on any standard CD machine. A native account of repertoire this orchestra owns.

Interesting Facts

  • Petrushka is heard here in the 1911 original orchestration, which calls for larger forces than the more frequently played 1947 revision.
  • Stravinsky wrote Jeu de cartes in 1937 for George Balanchine's American Ballet; it is structured as three "deals" of a card game, with the Joker as the recurring troublemaker.
  • The Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg premiered several major Stravinsky-era Russian ballets and is the historic home of the company that became the Ballets Russes nucleus.
  • The recording was produced in DSD by Vladimir Ryabenko (Petrushka) and James Mallinson (Jeu de cartes), with engineering by Classic Sound Ltd.
  • The Mariinsky label is the orchestra's own in-house imprint, launched under Gergiev to document the ensemble's core repertoire.
