Overview
Two of Prokofiev's most popular orchestral works on one SACD, from forces with the music in their blood: the Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev, with Denis Matsuev as the soloist in the Third Piano Concerto.
The Piano Concerto No. 3 is Prokofiev's most-played concerto — brilliant, percussive, full of the spiky lyricism that's his signature. Matsuev, a powerhouse Russian pianist with formidable technique, is ideally suited to its demands, and Gergiev gives him an orchestra that drives hard when it needs to. Recorded in the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre in 2012.
The Symphony No. 5, written in 1944, is the grander statement — a wartime work that Prokofiev described as a hymn to the human spirit. Its broad opening Andante, biting scherzo, deep Adagio, and exuberant finale make it one of the great 20th-century symphonies. This account was recorded live at the Moscow Conservatoire during Gergiev's Moscow Easter Festival.
As a hybrid SACD with stereo and 5.0 surround layers, it plays on any CD player while offering high-resolution sound to those equipped for it.
A strong pick for Prokofiev collectors, fans of Gergiev and the Mariinsky, and listeners who want demonstration-quality surround sound.
