Krisztina Jónás (Soprano)

Born: February 17, 1973 - Kazincbarcika, Hungary

The Hungarian soprano, Krisztina Jónás, studied piano at Zoltán Kodály Music School in Kazincbarcika (1979-1987), Béla Bartók Secondary Music School in Miskolc, specialized in solo-singing (1987-1992), and at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, graduated as singer; tutor: Júlia Pászthy, accompanist: Katalin Hegedűs Gönczy (1992-1998). She attended master-classes held by Adrienne Csengery, Valéria Szervánszky, György Kurtág, Walter C. More, Julia Hamari, Catherine Mackintos, and Anna Reynolds. At present Katalin Schultz is her singing master. In the years 1996, 2001 and 2008 she was awarded the Artisjus prize for her work in performing and popularizing Hungarian music. Between 1999 and 2001 she received Fischer Annie scholarship for performing arts.

In 1996, Krisztina Jónás sang G. Kurtág’s Attila József Fragments in the play Der Pol by Vladimir Nabokov in Berlin, Paris and Switzerland. In 1998 she presented in the Chamber Opera of Budapest and at the Contemporary Music Festival. Other world premieres of works by Hungarian composers she has taken part in include: Zoltán Jeney’s Contrafactum, Funeral Rite; László Sáry’s The annals of nature; G. Kurtág’s Fancsikó and Pinta Fragments Op. 40.

Krisztina Jónás had her first concert in the Chamber Opera of Budapest in 1997. From 1998 to 2003 she sang at the Chamber Opera roles: Daphne in Peri’s Euridice, First Soul in Monteverdi’s Il ballo delle Ingrate, Second woman/Spirit in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Drusilla in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, Clorinda in Monteverdi’s Il Combattimento di Trancredi e Clorinda, Dorinda in George Frideric Handel’s Orlando, Atalanta in G.F. Handel’s Xerxes.

Since then Krisztina Jónás has won fame in Hungary as a performer of oratorios, songs and contemporary pieces. She is a regular participant of the Budapest Spring and Autumn Festival, Földvári Days and Contemporary Music Programmes. Her repertoire is from Baroque to contemporary, which she performs in Hungary and abroad as well. She also gives solo concerts.

In 2003, Krisztina Jónás won the scholarship of the Soros Foundation for her performances and in 2004 Esztergom International Sacral Competition prize III. From 2004 she taught at the Hermann László Zeneiskola és Szakközépiskola énekművész (László Hermann School of Music and School of Art).
