Overview
Domenico Scarlatti wrote over 550 keyboard sonatas. Each one runs about three to six minutes. Each one is a single movement. And yet somehow, across that vast catalog of compact, quicksilver pieces, he never repeated himself.
Angela Hewitt selects seventeen of them here — a program spanning the full range of Scarlatti's keyboard world, from the searching introspection of the Sonata in E major (Kk206) at over nine minutes to the playful snap of the "Capriccio" in G major (Kk63) at just over two. The pairing instinct is sharp: Kk491 and Kk492 open the disc as a natural pair, Kk428 and Kk429 follow each other in A major, and the well-known "Gavota" (Kk64) sits alongside its companion Capriccio (Kk63) in the center of the program.
Hewitt plays on modern piano, and she makes no apology for it. Her touch is clean, her ornaments precise without being fussy, and her sense of phrase is exactly right for music that lives or dies on timing. This is Scarlatti that dances — sometimes gently, sometimes at a full sprint.

- Domenico Scarlatti spent much of his career in Portugal and Spain, serving the Portuguese and later Spanish royal courts — an unusual path for an Italian-born composer, and one that left Spanish folk idioms all over his sonatas.
- The Kirkpatrick catalog (the "Kk" numbering system used on this disc) was established by harpsichordist and scholar Ralph Kirkpatrick in 1953 and remains the standard reference for Scarlatti's 555 sonatas.
- Scarlatti and Handel were born the same year — 1685 — as was Johann Sebastian Bach. All three were exact contemporaries, though their musical worlds barely overlapped.
- Angela Hewitt is a Canadian pianist born in Ottawa in 1958, best known internationally for her complete Bach recordings on Hyperion, which won multiple Gramophone Awards.
- Scarlatti's sonatas were largely written for the harpsichord, but they have always attracted pianists — their wide dynamic contrasts, hand-crossings, and rapid figurations translate naturally to the modern instrument.
