Overview

Domenico Scarlatti wrote over 550 keyboard sonatas, most of them single-movement miniatures bursting with invention — hand-crossings, acciaccatura clusters, sudden harmonic swerves, and rhythms drawn from the Spanish world where he spent his later life. Angela Hewitt selects sixteen of them here and plays them on the modern piano rather than the harpsichord they were written for.

That choice is the album's argument. Hewitt, long admired for her Bach, brings the same clarity of voicing and rhythmic poise to Scarlatti, drawing out the music's wit and color without ever making it sound anachronistic. The selection ranges widely in mood, from the lyrical to the fiercely virtuosic.

Recorded for Hyperion with the label's characteristically natural piano sound, and running a generous 76 minutes. A fine entry point to Scarlatti for piano listeners, and a satisfying recital for those who already know the territory.

Interesting Facts

  • Domenico Scarlatti composed the bulk of his 555 keyboard sonatas in Spain and Portugal, serving as music teacher to Princess (later Queen) Maria Barbara.
  • The "Kk" numbers refer to the catalog compiled by harpsichordist Ralph Kirkpatrick in 1953, the standard ordering used today.
  • Angela Hewitt, born in Ottawa in 1958, is best known for her acclaimed recordings of J.S. Bach for Hyperion.
  • Scarlatti was born the same year as Bach and Handel — 1685 — yet developed a keyboard language entirely his own.
  • Several sonatas here imitate the strumming and snap of Spanish guitar, a sound Scarlatti absorbed from the folk music around him.
