James M. Gray (1851-1935), born in New York City, pastored for twenty-five years, became associated with Moody Bible Institute in 1904 and served as its president 1925-1934. A man of conservative theology, he was an expository preacher, evangelist, Bible teacher and capable administrator. His profound scholarship is reflected in his writings which include: How to Master the English Bible, Synthetic Bible Study, and Prophecy and the Lord's Return. He was one of the editors of the Scofield Reference Bible, edited Moody Monthly and wrote several popular hymns.
