Interesting Facts

The Original Film's Star-Studded History

The 1956 film "High Society" was a musical remake of the 1940 classic "The Philadelphia Story." It featured an extraordinary ensemble cast including Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Grace Kelly in what would be her final film role before becoming Princess of Monaco. The movie received two Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Original Song for "True Love," which became a million-selling hit for Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly.

Cole Porter's Brilliant Contribution

Legendary composer and lyricist Cole Porter wrote all the songs for "High Society," creating what many consider some of his most sophisticated and witty work. Porter's clever wordplay and memorable melodies perfectly captured the film's themes of high society, romance, and the clash between old and new money. "True Love" became one of Porter's most enduring ballads, while "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" showcased his talent for social commentary wrapped in catchy tunes.

Louis Armstrong's Significant Role

Jazz icon Louis Armstrong appeared in the film with his band, playing himself and serving as a musical Greek chorus of sorts. His performance of "High Society Calypso" (represented as track 2 on this album) introduced the characters and set the stage for the story. Armstrong's inclusion demonstrated the growing mainstream acceptance of jazz in popular culture during the 1950s.
