A film a rendező generációjának kamaszkorát ábrázolja — azét a fiatalságét, amelynek jövőjét az 1956-os forradalom és az 1968-as események sarokpontjai határozták meg. A szűkebben vett cselekmény 1963-ban, az amnesztia évében játszódik.

Teljes mozdulatlanságában tárul fel a korszak: a „kint és a bent", a „mi és az ők" éles szembenállása, ahol mindenki tud mindenről, de semmiről sem lehet beszélni.
