Overview

Fauré wrote his thirteen Barcarolles across four decades, from 1881 to 1921 — long enough that they trace his whole harmonic evolution, from the lyrical Romanticism of No. 1 to the spare, almost modernist late style of No. 13. Hearing all thirteen together, as this disc lets you do, is a different experience than picking a favorite off a compilation: you hear a composer quietly rebuilding his own language piece by piece.

Pierre-Alain Volondat closes the program with the Ballade in F sharp major, Op. 19, in its original solo piano guise rather than the more commonly heard version with orchestra — a nice reminder that the piece started life as a purely pianistic conception before Fauré expanded it. At 77 minutes, this is a generously filled disc, recorded with clean, detailed DDD sound at Antwerp's Singel Concert Hall in 1995. Good pick for anyone assembling a serious Fauré piano collection rather than just sampling the famous bits.

Interesting Facts

  • Fauré composed his Barcarolles over a 40-year span (1881–1921), making the set a rare document of a single composer's stylistic development within one genre.
  • The Ballade, Op. 19, was originally conceived for solo piano in 1879 before Fauré later orchestrated it — this recording restores the original conception.
  • Fauré served as director of the Paris Conservatoire and taught composers including Ravel and Nadia Boulanger, shaping much of the next generation of French music.
  • Despite progressive hearing loss in his later years that eventually left him unable to hear high or low pitches accurately, Fauré kept composing into his late works, including the later Barcarolles on this disc.
  • The cover reproduces Paul Mathey's 1885 portrait of Fauré, painted the same decade several of these Barcarolles were written.
