Overview

This is the concert that closed Woodstock — and Jimi Hendrix made sure no one would ever forget it. His band took the stage at 8 a.m. on August 18, 1969, playing to roughly 30,000 people who had stayed through the night, and the two-hour set that followed is one of the defining performances in rock history. This Definitive 2 DVD Collection, produced by Experience Hendrix and released in 2005, is the most complete visual document of that morning ever assembled.

Disc 1 presents the full concert in its original performance sequence — something no previous release had done — with never-before-seen footage of "Foxey Lady," "Message to Love," "Hey Joe," "Spanish Castle Magic," and "Lover Man." The audio was mixed from scratch in both 5.1 surround and 2.0 stereo by Eddie Kramer, the engineer who recorded the original concert, giving the performance a presence and clarity that the notoriously chaotic original recordings had never previously achieved.

Disc 2, subtitled A Second Look, is the more unusual of the two. It combines never-before-seen black-and-white footage of the concert with color alternate camera angles to produce a distinct second viewing experience — essentially a second film of the same event, shot from different vantage points. It also contains the first-ever release of "Hear My Train a Comin'," a performance that had been held back from every prior Woodstock release.

The bonus material is extensive: a documentary tracing the road to Woodstock through new interviews with promoter Michael Lang and band members Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox, Larry Lee, and Juma Sultan; a press conference filmed in Harlem two weeks after the festival; a featurette with Billy Cox and Larry Lee recalling their friendship with Hendrix; and a detailed look at the recording process with Eddie Kramer. A rare artifacts gallery rounds it out, with scans of original festival posters, tickets, and Hendrix's own handwritten set list draft.

For anyone serious about Hendrix or about Woodstock, this is the set to own.

Interesting Facts

  • Hendrix's Woodstock performance is the only time he performed the U.S. national anthem — "The Star-Spangled Banner" — as a solo guitar piece, using controlled feedback and whammy bar to evoke sirens, bombs, and chaos. It became one of the most analyzed guitar moments in rock history.
  • The concert was originally scheduled for Sunday night but was pushed to Monday morning; by the time Hendrix took the stage, the peak crowd of 400,000 had thinned to around 30,000 die-hards.
  • "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" was recorded just 15 months before Woodstock, in May 1968, during the Electric Ladyland sessions — Hendrix reportedly improvised the entire song on the spot while cameras filmed him for a television documentary.
  • Eddie Kramer, who mixed this release, also engineered every major Hendrix studio album, including Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love, and Electric Ladyland. His involvement ensures the 5.1 remix reflects Hendrix's original sonic intentions.
  • "Hear My Train a Comin'" — presented here for the first time in its Woodstock performance — is one of Hendrix's most personal blues compositions, rooted in the Delta tradition he absorbed during his years touring the Southern R&B circuit before his breakthrough in London.
  • The set was produced by Janie Hendrix, Jimi's sister and president of Experience Hendrix LLC, the family-controlled company that has managed his estate since winning a landmark legal battle in 1995.
