Overview
This three-disc box gathers Jimi Hendrix from two angles: the documentaries that try to make sense of him, and a live CD that simply lets him play. The audio disc comes from the 18th and 24th of February 1969 at London's Royal Albert Hall — the Jimi Hendrix Experience's final UK concerts together. Nine tracks, roughly 50 minutes, including "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)," "Purple Haze," "Fire," "Little Wing," and a charging "Wild Thing."
The two DVDs run about 160 minutes. "Feedback" pulls together interviews with people who knew Hendrix and folds in concert footage and clips from his most recognizable performances, much of it drawn from Rainbow Bridge. The second documentary, "The Last 24 Hours," turns to his death on September 18, 1970, walking through the circumstances and laying out the questions that have never fully closed.
For a Hendrix collector, the appeal is the combination — a late-period live recording and two films in one package, with English audio and Dutch subtitles. A solid pickup for anyone building out a Hendrix shelf.
Interesting Facts
- The CD captures the Experience's last UK shows; the band's classic lineup with Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding would not tour the UK together again.
- Hendrix died in London on September 18, 1970, at age 27, and the circumstances remain debated — the subject of the set's "The Last 24 Hours" documentary.
- "Wild Thing," credited here to Chip Taylor, was a staple Hendrix cover; he famously set his guitar alight performing it at Monterey Pop in 1967.
- "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" became a UK number-one single in 1970, weeks after his death.
- Much of the concert and clip footage in "Feedback" traces back to Rainbow Bridge, the 1971 film tied to Hendrix's Maui performance.
