Ten Years After are one of those bands whose Woodstock moment ended up overshadowing the rest of their catalogue. Alvin Lee's eleven-minute I'm Going Home in the Woodstock film made him, briefly, the fastest guitarist on Earth in the eyes of every teenager who saw it. What that frame misses is that TYA were really a blues band — a tight, jazz-fluent, four-man unit built on Lee's guitar, Leo Lyons's running bass lines, Chick Churchill's Hammond, and Ric Lee's swinging drums. This 1983 Marquee set is them at their most natural setting: small stage, hot room, set list lifted straight from the Chicago blues canon plus a few of their own pieces.
You get Good Morning Little Schoolgirl and Help Me — Sonny Boy Williamson covers — Woodchoppers Ball, a long Slow Blues, and the title track Goin' Home. Fifty-four minutes of a band going back to where they started. The cover signatures from the members themselves turn a strong Cherry Red Films archive release into a piece a serious British-blues collector keeps behind glass.

Interesting Facts
Ten Years After formed in Nottingham in 1966 — though the rhythm section of Alvin Lee and Leo Lyons had been playing together since 1960 in earlier bands. Their breakthrough came at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1968, but it was their performance at Woodstock in August 1969 that turned them into an arena act overnight. The I'm Going Home footage in Michael Wadleigh's Woodstock film made Alvin Lee briefly the most-talked-about guitarist in rock.
Their 1971 album A Space in Time was their commercial peak, producing the single I'd Love to Change the World — a track that has been licensed, sampled and covered for decades since (including a notable Kid Rock version).
The Marquee Club on Wardour Street, where this 1983 set was filmed, was the spiritual home of British rock — the Rolling Stones, the Who, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and David Bowie all played pivotal early shows there. The original Wardour Street venue closed in 1988, making any clean archive footage from inside that room a piece of British music-history real estate.
Alvin Lee passed away in March 2013. The surviving Lyons-Churchill-Ric Lee lineup has continued the Ten Years After name with vocalist Marcus Bonfanti.
