Overview

La Stravaganza, Op. 4, is Vivaldi at his most inventive. Published around 1716, these twelve concertos pushed the solo violin further than almost anything written before them - more daring in their passagework, more harmonically adventurous, more willing to let the soloist roam. The title says it plainly: extravagance.

Federico Guglielmo recorded the complete set with his period ensemble L'Arte dell'Arco in July 2014, working inside two historic churches near Padua - an environment that suits Vivaldi's sound world with an almost architectural logic. The acoustic is warm without being blurry, and Guglielmo's playing has the kind of technical ease that lets the music's wit come through rather than disappearing behind effort.

The program is arranged to balance the disc timings rather than following Op. 4's original numbering, which keeps the listening experience even across both CDs. Each concerto follows the standard fast-slow-fast pattern Vivaldi helped establish, but within that framework the harmonic surprises come often enough to hold attention across two full discs and nearly two hours of music.

This recording was made in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano Antonio Vivaldi at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini - the scholarly institution that has done more than any other to establish authoritative texts of Vivaldi's works. That context matters: the performances are grounded in serious research as well as period-instrument experience.

Interesting Facts

  • La Stravaganza was dedicated to Vettor Dolfin, a Venetian nobleman and Vivaldi's pupil - a reminder that the composer worked within a patronage system where individual dedication still carried real social weight.
  • The Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice houses the most comprehensive archive of Vivaldi manuscripts in the world, making it the natural scholarly partner for recordings of this kind.
  • Vivaldi composed at least 230 violin concertos across his career - a productivity that prompted a famous quip (often attributed to Stravinsky) that he had written the same concerto 500 times.
  • L'Arte dell'Arco was founded by Federico Guglielmo and his father Giovanni Guglielmo, making it one of the few active period-instrument ensembles with a direct family lineage at its core.
  • The RV numbers in the track listing refer to the Ryom-Verzeichnis catalog, the standard scholarly index of Vivaldi's works compiled by Peter Ryom and first published in 1974.
