Overview

The second volume in Brilliant Classics' survey of Respighi's orchestral music gathers six works that show the Italian master well beyond the famous Roman tone poems. The Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma under Francesco La Vecchia plays with idiomatic warmth and a real feel for Respighi's color.

The major draws are Impressioni brasiliane — Respighi's vivid response to a 1927 trip to Brazil, complete with a haunting "snake-house" movement — and Vetrate di chiesa ("Church Windows"), four luminous panels inspired by stained glass. Trittico botticelliano paints three Botticelli canvases, including the beloved "La Primavera."

Disc two turns to the concertante side: the Concerto a cinque, the autumnal Poema autunnale for violin and orchestra, and the neo-baroque Concerto all'antica. A clutch of fine Italian soloists steps forward across these scores.

For collectors building a complete Respighi, or anyone who loves richly orchestrated late-Romantic music, this two-disc set is excellent value and well recorded.

Interesting Facts

  • Respighi was a master orchestrator who studied briefly with Rimsky-Korsakov, whose influence shows in his brilliant handling of color.
  • Impressioni brasiliane (1928) was inspired by Respighi's South American tour; its central movement evokes a visit to a snake institute in São Paulo.
  • Vetrate di chiesa (1926) grew out of earlier piano pieces, reworked into a glowing orchestral suite depicting scenes of faith.
  • Trittico botticelliano (1927) musically portrays three paintings by Sandro Botticelli, including "The Birth of Venus."
  • This complete-orchestral-music cycle was recorded in Rome with the city's own Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma, lending it a native authority.
  • Brilliant Classics built a worldwide reputation for high-quality recordings at budget prices, making large composer surveys widely accessible.
