Overview
Both of Chopin's piano concertos on a single disc, cleanly recorded and sensibly priced — this Brilliant Classics release does exactly what a budget classical label should do, and does it well.
The two concertos are a natural pair and a logical program. Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11 runs just over forty minutes across three movements and is the more dramatic of the two — the opening "Allegro maestoso" alone takes nearly twenty minutes. Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21 is the more inward, lyrical work, its central "Larghetto" one of Chopin's most purely beautiful slow movements. Together they give a complete picture of Chopin the orchestral pianist: technically demanding, harmonically subtle, and never far from the salon intimacy that defines his style even in a concert hall.
Paolo Giacometti plays with a clean, unfussy technique that serves the music without imposing on it. The Rotterdam Young Philharmonic under Arie van Beek provides an accompaniment that is attentive without being cautious. The 1998 recording at Muziekcentrum Vredenburg in Utrecht, produced and engineered by C. Jared Sacks, is warm and well-balanced.
A solid, no-fuss recording of two essential works. An easy recommendation for anyone building a classical collection.
Interesting Facts

- Paolo Giacometti is a Dutch pianist of Italian descent, particularly known for his period-instrument performances and recordings of Romantic repertoire.
