Albanian

Albanian is an Indo-European language spoken by approximately 7.6 million people,primarily in Albania and Kosovo but also in other areas of the Balkans in which there is an Albanian population, including western Macedonia, southern Montenegro, southern Serbia and northwestern Greece. Albanian is also spoken in centuries-old Albanian colonies in southern Greece and in southern Italy and Sicily.

The main Bible translation into Albanian is the work of Kostandin Kristoforidhi.

In 2000, the Jehovah's Witnesses' New World Translationof the Christian Greek Scriptures was released in Albanian; the entire New World Translation ofthe Holy Scriptures in Albanian was released in 2005.

The Albanian New Testament was first published in 1827 inthe Tosk dialect. In 1872 the New Testament was translated into the Gheg (Geg)dialect. The first complete translation of the Scriptures was translated by DomFilipaj in the 1970s. A translation of the Italian Diodati Bible wascompleted in 1994, which is used widely in the evangelical churches. Atranslation of the whole Shqip Bibla by Dr Stephen Etches was producedin 2003. A new translation of the New Testament from the original Greek, calledDhiata e Re, was published in 2007.
