Maya Plisetskaya, Mikhail Petukhov, and Victor Barykin perform in this 1980 Bolshoi Ballet production of the Shchedrin ballet conducted by Yuri Simonov. Choreography is by Maya Plisetskaya & Natalia Rizhenko.

Russian composers have long turned to their literary compatriots for inspiration, perhaps most notably in Boris Godounov and Eugene Onegin, by way of Pushkin. Russian choreographers, on the other hand, have more frequently turned to Shakespeare, with Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, and Romeo and Juliet receiving major productions.

Maya Plisetskaya's own choreographic ventures centered on two relatively "modern" writers, Tolstoy and Chekhov: the former inspired her first major production, Anna Karenina, the latter provided the
impulse for The Seagull and Lady with the Dog.

Anna Karenina is faithful to the novel, supplying ample opportunities for dancers who act. In Plisetskaya's impassioned portrayal of a woman torn and ultimately destroyed by an impossible liaison, dance
and theatre are inexorably intertwined. This live performance from the stage of the Bolshoi, featuring a first-rate supporting cast and original costumes designed by Pierre Cardin, captures the dramatic force of Tolstoy's tragic story.
