Overview

This 23-disc box gathers Alfred Brendel's earlier Mozart and Beethoven recordings — the Vox-era performances from 1955 to 1975 that established him, before his later cycles for Philips, as one of the supreme interpreters of the Classical piano repertoire.

The scope is enormous. The Mozart discs take in piano concertos, the "Duport" Variations, the Fantasy in C minor, and chamber works. The Beethoven side is a near-complete world of its own: all five piano concertos including the "Emperor," the Choral Fantasy, a vast swathe of the sonatas, the monumental Diabelli Variations, and the Bagatelles.

For collectors, it's a remarkable amount of canonical piano music from a great artist, at box-set value — a portrait of Brendel building the interpretations he'd be known for.
