Overview
Four Beethoven violin sonatas recorded in a single live concert — that's a demanding programme by any standard, and Ibragimova and Tiberghien pull it off with the kind of focus that makes 82 minutes feel compact. The disc opens with the early D major Op. 12 No. 1, moves through the stormy A minor Op. 23, then the lighter G major Op. 30 No. 3, and closes with the substantial C minor Op. 30 No. 2. It's a well-considered arc: you get Beethoven's early elegance and his more volatile, searching voice in the same sitting.
Alina Ibragimova is one of the most distinctive violinists working today — technically immaculate, but with an interpretive edge that avoids the polished neutrality that can flatten chamber music. Cédric Tiberghien is an equally serious partner at the piano, and their interplay here is genuinely conversational rather than accompanied solo violin. The Observer described Ibragimova's playing as showing "volatile extremes of speed, volume and tonal colour which… mercurial" — an apt summary of what makes this recording worth owning over a studio alternative.
Wigmore Hall Live releases are taken directly from concert performances at one of the world's most acoustically celebrated recital venues. What you hear is the room, the occasion, and the performance exactly as it happened.
Interesting Facts
- Wigmore Hall in Marylebone, London, is widely regarded as one of the finest chamber music venues in the world — its intimacy and acoustics make it a preferred setting for exactly this kind of duo recital.

- Beethoven's Op. 23 Violin Sonata in A minor is one of only two of his sonatas in a minor key, and is among the most dramatic and concentrated works in the violin-piano canon.
- The Op. 30 set of three sonatas was dedicated to Tsar Alexander I of Russia; they were composed in 1801–02, during the same period as Beethoven's Symphony No. 2.
