Overview
Emmanuel Pahud, principal flute of the Berlin Philharmonic, turns to the heart of the German Romantic repertoire — and to a small irony along the way. None of the four composers gathered here ever wrote a piece for the flute. Pahud and pianist Eric Le Sage make the case that they should have, transcribing music by Robert and Clara Schumann and by Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn so naturally that the flute seems to have been the intended voice all along.
The program leans into the intimate, song-like side of the 1840s and '50s. Robert Schumann's 3 Romances Op. 94 and Fantasiestücke Op. 73 frame the disc; Clara Schumann's 3 Romances Op. 22 answer them with equal warmth. In between, six of Fanny Mendelssohn's Lieder let the flute take the singer's line — "Die Mainacht," "Du bist die Ruh'," and others — before Felix Mendelssohn's Sonata in F closes the recital on a grander scale.
The flute is an instrument that changes mood and color at will, and this mid-19th-century music suits it completely. A polished, deeply musical recital from one of the great flautists of the age, paired with one of France's finest Romantic-repertoire pianists — and it ships brand new in its original factory wrap.
Interesting Facts
- Emmanuel Pahud became principal flautist of the Berlin Philharmonic at age 22 under Claudio Abbado, one of the youngest ever appointed to the post.
- Not one of the four composers on this album wrote original music for the flute; every work here is a transcription or arrangement.
- Clara Schumann was one of the most celebrated concert pianists of the 19th century, and her 3 Romances Op. 22 were dedicated to the violinist Joseph Joachim.
- Fanny Mendelssohn, Felix's older sister, composed several hundred works, many published during her lifetime only under her brother's name.
- Pahud and Eric Le Sage have been chamber-music partners for years, a long collaboration that shows in the close give-and-take of these performances.
- The album was released in 2023 by Warner Classics, with a total playing time of just over 65 minutes.
