Clemens Heinrich Krauss (31 March 1893 – 16 May 1954) was an Austrian conductor and opera impresario, particularly associated with the music of Richard Strauss, Johann Strauss and Richard Wagner.

Krauss was born in Vienna to Clementine Krauss, then a 15-year-old dancer in the Vienna Imperial Opera Ballet, later a leading actress and operetta singer, niece of the prominent nineteenth-century operatic soprano Gabrielle Krauss. His natural father, Chevalier Hector Baltazzi [de] (1851-1916), came from a family of wealthy Phanariot bankers resident in Vienna. Baltazzi's older sister Helene was married to Baron Albin Vetsera and was the mother of Baroness Mary Vetsera, who was accordingly Clemens Krauss' first cousin.

Krauss sang in the Hofkapelle (Imperial Choir) as a Vienna Choir Boy. He graduated from the Vienna Conservatory in 1912, after studying composition with Hermann Graedener and theory with Richard Heuberger there. He was then appointed chorus master in the Brünn Theatre, Moravia, (1912-1913), where he made his conducting debut in 1913. The Romanian soprano Viorica Ursuleac, who often sang under him, became his second wife.

Der Ring des Nibelungen is an opera cycle in four parts by Richard Wagner , for which he wrote the text, composed the music and provided detailed scenic directions. The work is based on the Nibelungen saga or the Nibelungenlied . The tetralogy is regarded as Wagner's opus summum : Wagner worked on this main work with interruptions from 1848 to 1874. With a performance time of around 16 hours (one evening before and three days), an orchestra of over 100 musicians (including 6 harps  and 4  tenor or bass tubas, which Wagner had specially made) and with 34 soloists (plus male and female choir) it is one of the most extensive musical stage works ever. Under the direction of the composer, the entire tetralogy (also called The Ring for short ) was performed for the first time in August 1876 in the Bayreuth Festspielhaus . The musical director was Hans Richter . The work is also referred to as a trilogy , because from this point of view only the days of the festival count.
