Overview

Here is the thing—this is not just a regular tourist trinket. This vintage Soviet bas-relief sculpture honors the legendary Battle of Stalingrad fought at Mamayev Kurgan during World War II. Made by the Volgograd Ceramic Factory back in the Soviet era, the front side depicts a highly detailed, rugged battle scene featuring Soviet soldiers, a tank, trenches, and a standard-bearer charging forward into combat. The rough cut top edge mimics the jagged, war-torn landscape of the hill.

Flip it around and you see the back side is styled like a brick wall. It features a famous engraved quote honoring the defenders. The whole piece got a heavy, somber dark grey tone that looks like real stone or poured concrete from war memorials.

Interesting Facts

  • The Back Inscription: The text on the reverse reads: "Железный ветер бил им в лицо, а они всё шли вперёд..." This translates to "An iron wind blew in their faces, yet they still kept moving forward..." It is a deeply moving quote from Vasily Grossman's famous journalistic accounts of the battle. It is also inscribed on the monumental wall of the actual Mamayev Kurgan memorial complex in Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad).
  • Factory Paper Label: Remarkably, this piece still retains its original paper price tag on the bottom base. It shows it originally cost 4 rubles ("Цена 4 руб.") and was classified as first-sort quality ("Сорт 1").
  • The Location: Mamayev Kurgan is the dominant height overlooking Volgograd. It saw some of the most brutal hand-to-hand fighting of the entire war between the Soviet 62nd Army and the German 6th Army.
