Overview

Godspell arrived on Broadway in 1971 and never really left - Stephen Schwartz's musical retelling of the Gospel of Matthew has been performed continuously around the world ever since, and for good reason. It is joyful, direct, and surprisingly moving, built on ensemble energy rather than star turns.

This CD captures the Hungarian-language production by Vasutas Musical Stúdió, with the text adapted by Gebora György. The cast of twelve - including Jájai Máté, Csiszár István, Bartus Patrícia, and Nemes Krisztina among others - brings the kind of committed, full-company performance that community and repertory productions do better than almost anyone. The songs land in Hungarian with real warmth: "Védj meg Urunk!" for "Save the People," "A világ fénye" for "Light of the World," and the closing "A vég" carry the show's emotional arc intact across the language barrier.

Sponsored by MÁV and released under the InterCity imprint, this is a document of a Hungarian ensemble production that clearly meant something to the people who made it. Eleven tracks, the full show, in Hungarian.

Interesting Facts

  • Godspell premiered off-Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theatre on May 17, 1971, just weeks before another landmark musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, arrived on Broadway - the two shows have been in friendly competition ever since.
  • Stephen Schwartz composed the score while still in his early twenties; he went on to write the music for PippinThe Magic Show, and decades later, Wicked.
  • The title comes from the Old English word "godspel," meaning "good news" - the same root as the word "gospel."
  • Vasutas Musical Stúdió is a Hungarian amateur and semi-professional musical theatre company connected to the Hungarian railway workers' cultural network (MÁV), with a long tradition of staging international musicals in Hungarian translation.
  • The Hungarian adaptation by Gebora György renders Schwartz's colloquial, folk-and-rock-inflected score in a vernacular that preserves both the playfulness and the spiritual sincerity of the original.
  • "Day by Day," the show's best-known song, appears here as "Megyek Veled" - one of the most covered songs from any 1970s musical, with recordings by artists ranging from folk singers to pop acts worldwide.
