Overview

This is the audio document of a one-off Brazilian television event: Ivete Sangalo sitting down with two of the towering figures of MPB, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, for an intimate program filmed in Rio in November 2011. Three generations and three temperaments of Bahian music in conversation and in song.

The repertoire pulls from across all three careers — Caetano's "O Meu Amor" and "Você É Linda," Gil's "A Novidade" and "Drão," Ivete's own hits, plus shared standards like "Toda Menina Baiana" and "Olhos nos Olhos." Stripped back and unhurried, the arrangements put the songs and the voices front and center rather than the spectacle.

For anyone who loves Brazilian popular music, it's a warm, generous set: two living legends and the biggest pop voice of their country's next generation, trading songs as friends. Fifteen tracks, released on CD by Universal under the Globo Marcas banner.

Interesting Facts

  • Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso were co-founders of Tropicália, the late-1960s movement that transformed Brazilian music and culture.
  • Both were exiled by Brazil's military dictatorship in 1969, spending time in London before returning home in the early 1970s.
  • Ivete Sangalo, from Bahia like Gil and Caetano, rose to fame with the band Banda Eva before becoming one of Brazil's best-selling solo artists.
  • Gilberto Gil served as Brazil's Minister of Culture from 2003 to 2008.
  • The program was recorded as part of TV Globo's special programming and later released as this CD by Universal Music.
