Overview

The Who live is a different proposition from almost any other band in rock history. Pete Townshend's windmill arm, Roger Daltrey swinging the microphone, Keith Moon detonating the drum kit — these weren't stage moves bolted onto a polished act. They were the act. Maximum R&B Live assembles more than two and a half hours of largely unseen concert footage spanning 1965 to 1989, tracking the band from sweaty club dates at the Marquee through festival headline slots and stadium shows on three continents.

This Deluxe Limited Edition re-issue goes further than the original release. The full programme has been presented in 5.1 surround sound for the first time, three previously unreleased performances have been added (London Coliseum 1969, Kilburn 1977, Shea Stadium 1982), and the bonus disc carries the entire never-before-seen Rockpalast concert from Germany in 1981 — a set that runs to 15 tracks and was unavailable in any form before this edition.

Disc 1 jumps between eras with a kind of controlled chaos that mirrors the band itself: a Richmond Jazz & Blues Festival clip from 1965 sits a few tracks away from a Giants Stadium show from 1989, with Isle of Wight 1970, Charlton Athletic Football Club 1974, and Chicago 1979 filling the gaps. The through-line is the sheer physical intensity the band brings regardless of venue size. Daltrey at Monterey in 1967 and Daltrey at Shea in 1982 are recognisably the same performer — the scale changes, the commitment doesn't.

For anyone building a serious rock DVD library, this is the set that earns its shelf space. The footage is rare, the surround mix is a genuine upgrade, and the Rockpalast bonus disc alone justifies the price of admission.

Interesting Facts

  • Keith Moon, who died in 1978, appears across a substantial portion of the Disc 1 footage — making these performances among the most important live documents of the classic four-piece lineup of Townshend, Daltrey, Entwistle, and Moon.
  • The Concert for Kampuchea (1979), included here, was a landmark benefit event at Hammersmith Odeon organised partly by Paul McCartney; The Who's headlining set was one of the most powerful performances of the night.
  • The Rockpalast series (German public broadcaster WDR) recorded dozens of major international acts in full, unedited concerts through the late 1970s and 1980s — many of these recordings are the only complete professional footage of those specific shows.
  • John Entwistle, often called "The Ox," is widely regarded as one of the most technically advanced rock bassists ever recorded; his locked-in interplay with Moon is audible even in vintage archive footage.
  • "My Generation" has been performed by The Who in more live configurations — from three-piece to stadium-sized touring band — than arguably any other single rock song; this set includes multiple versions from different eras.
  • The Isle of Wight Festival 1970 drew an estimated 600,000 people, making it one of the largest music events in history; The Who's slot is represented here alongside performances by Young Man Blues.
