Overview
This is the live document of Dana Fuchs at full throttle — the gravel-and-honey voice that's drawn endless Janis Joplin comparisons, caught in a real New York room rather than a studio. Live from NYC runs a thirteen-song main set, an "I'd Rather Go Blind" encore, and a stripped-back Acoustic Sessions reel, so you get both sides of the band: the full-tilt electric blues-rock and the bare, close-miked songwriting underneath it.
What makes this particular copy worth grabbing is the silver-ink autograph across the cover, signed by Fuchs herself with the "Live from NYC" flourish. Signed concert DVDs from her early Antler King era don't surface often, and a used copy in honest shape is exactly the kind of thing a fan or autograph collector wants on the shelf.
The set leans on her own material, and the acoustic half shows the bones of the songwriting that later carried her studio records — gospel-tinged moments in "God's Song" and "Bible Baby" sitting alongside the harder electric cuts.
Interesting Facts
- Dana Fuchs broke through to a wide audience playing Sadie in Julie Taymor's 2007 Beatles musical film Across the Universe, recorded around the same period as this concert.
- She co-wrote much of her catalogue with longtime guitarist and collaborator Jon Diamond, whose playing anchors this band.
- Her voice has been compared to Janis Joplin so often that she eventually starred in the off-Broadway show Love, Janis, performing Joplin's songs nightly.
- Antler King Records was effectively her own early home base, which is why pressings from this era stay relatively scarce on the second-hand market.
- The Acoustic Sessions bonus includes "Drive" and "What You See," songs that didn't always make her electric live sets — a draw for completists.
