Overview

Carlo Forlivesi is an Italian composer whose work moves freely between worlds — Western contemporary classical, electronics, and the traditional instruments of Japan, where he spent formative years. This Tactus release is a wide-ranging portrait disc gathering eighteen of his pieces across five categories, much of it issued here for the first time.

The program is deliberately varied. Electronic works open it, followed by pieces for Japanese traditional instruments — shakuhachi, koto, biwa — that sit at the heart of Forlivesi's identity. Chamber and vocal music follow, and the disc closes with arrangements that reach back to medieval sources (the Codex Faenza, the Llibre Vermell) and across to Charles Ives's "The Unanswered Question."

The performer list is international and substantial, from soloists to the Kyoto Chamber Orchestra "Le Jardin du Temps et d'Espace." For listeners drawn to where contemporary composition meets non-Western tradition, this is a rich and serious survey.
