Overview
This is the album where Pēteris Vasks's Second Cello Concerto first reached record — a world-premiere recording of Klātbūtne ("Presence"), the concerto the Latvian composer wrote expressly for Sol Gabetta and the Amsterdam Sinfonietta. Gabetta plays it as music made for her, because it was, and the partnership with Candida Thompson's strings gives the long Vasks lines room to breathe.
Vasks writes in a language that's spacious, tonal, and openly spiritual, and German critics caught the mood exactly — the Rheinische Post called it "music that aspires to Heaven." The concerto carries that aspiration across three connected movements before the disc opens onto two more intimate worlds.
The personal touches are part of the appeal. Musique du soir for cello and organ is performed with Gabetta accompanied by her own mother, Irène Timacheff-Gabetta, at the organ. The recital closes with Grāmata čellam ("The Book"), a searching piece for unaccompanied cello. A new release from a living master, presented brand new in its original factory wrap.
