Overview

Simone Kermes has built her reputation on Baroque repertoire that most sopranos sidestep - the raw, emotionally bruising music of the 17th century. On Love, she assembles seventeen pieces all circling the same obsession: desire, loss, jealousy, and the kind of longing that ends badly.

The program is smartly constructed. Kermes opens with Monteverdi's "Lamento della ninfa" and closes with Purcell's Dido's Lament - bookends that bracket nearly a century of Baroque heartbreak. In between, she moves through lesser-known gems by Barbara Strozzi, Tarquinio Merula, and John Dowland alongside French airs by Antoine Boësset and Michel Lambert. The variety keeps the disc alive from start to finish.

La Magnifica Comunità, led from the violin by Enrico Casazza, plays with the kind of rhythmic elasticity and tonal warmth that suits Kermes perfectly. The ensemble never overwhelms - it breathes with her.

The voice itself is extraordinary. Agile, full-colored, and never cautious, Kermes brings a theatrical immediacy to every piece. This is Baroque singing with conviction, not museum reverence.

Released by Sony Classical in 2016, this disc belongs in any serious collection of Baroque vocal music.
