Overview

Cublai, Gran Kan de' Tartari is a genuine rediscovery — a comic opera by Antonio Salieri, censored before it could even premiere in 1788 and left unperformed for more than two centuries. This is its world premiere recording, brought to life by Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques.

The reason it was suppressed is the fun of it: Giovanni Battista Casti's libretto dresses up a sharp parody of European monarchy as a story set in the court of the Great Khan, with the figure of the Khan read by contemporaries as a thinly veiled jab at Peter the Great of Russia. Salieri's music is full of heroic-comic energy, and the cast — Mirco Palazzi, Marie Lys, Ana Quintans and others — delivers it with relish.

A landmark release for lovers of Classical-era opera and anyone curious about Salieri beyond the Mozart legend.

Interesting Facts

  • The opera was censored before its planned 1788 premiere and waited until 2024 to be performed and recorded in its original version.
  • Casti's libretto satirises European monarchical courts under cover of a plot set in Cathay (China).
  • The Great Khan figure was widely read as a parody of Tsar Peter the Great of Russia — politically risky in its day.
  • This is the world premiere recording, conducted by Christophe Rousset, a leading champion of neglected opera.
  • It is issued as a Limited Numbered Edition by Aparté.
