Overview
This is the whole Rory Gallagher–Rockpalast story in one box: every concert the Irish guitarist gave for WDR's legendary German rock TV institution between 1976 and 1990, plus two loose backstage jam sessions. Across three discs you get the lean 1976 WDR Studio L set, the roaring Grugahalle and Loreley shows, and the late 1990 Cologne gig where Jack Bruce joins for the encore — roughly nine and a half hours of one of the most ferociously honest live performers in blues rock.
What makes this particular copy stand out is the signed cover. Two autographs sit in black ink across the gold logo. Given the release dates they are not Rory's own — he passed in 1995 — but they tie the set to the people who made it, which is exactly the kind of provenance a Gallagher collector notices.
The performances are the draw. Gallagher live was a different animal from Gallagher in the studio: longer, rougher, the Stratocaster pushed hard. Rockpalast captured him at full tilt across fifteen years, and this limited edition gathers all of it.
Interesting Facts
- Rory Gallagher turned down the chance to replace Mick Taylor in the Rolling Stones, preferring to lead his own band.
- His battered 1961 Fender Stratocaster is one of the most famous guitars in rock, its finish worn away by his playing.
- The 1990 Cologne show on DVD 3 features Cream bassist Jack Bruce sitting in for three songs, including "Born Under a Bad Sign."
- Rockpalast, broadcast by WDR, became a rite of passage for touring rock acts in Europe from the late 1970s onward.
- The booklet reproduces a 1979 German magazine interview in which Gallagher calls his music a passion rather than a profession.
