Overview
This DVD presents the Hungarian adaptation of Gérard Presgurvic's popular musical "Romeo et Juliette," based on Shakespeare's timeless tragedy. Following its tremendous success in Paris, the Budapest Operetta Theatre premiered the Hungarian version in January 2004, directed by KERO. The production became an immediate sensation with songs climbing radio charts and the show attracting over 250,000 viewers at the Operetta Theatre. The Hungarian cast recording achieved platinum status in 2006.
This DVD captures the spectacular open-air performance from August 2005 at the Szeged Festival, where the production was staged with monumental sets, dazzling costumes, and over 200 dancers and extras across seven performances, seen by 30,000 spectators. Filmed with more than ten cameras, the recording showcases Hungary's premier musical theatre talent in a production The New York Times praised by saying, "Budapest has such a vibrant musical theatre that its productions would stand their ground on Broadway and the West End."

Interesting Facts
International Adaptation Success
Gérard Presgurvic's musical "Romeo et Juliette" has become one of the most successful French musical exports, with productions in over 20 countries including Italy, Russia, Belgium, Canada, and Hungary. The Hungarian adaptation stands out as one of the most acclaimed international versions, receiving recognition for its unique staging and vocal performances.
Creative Vision
As Presgurvic himself states on the DVD packaging: "Romeo is the most romantic and tragic piece in world literature. There couldn't be a better subject for a good musical, as it contains everything: hatred, love, misunderstanding, death, wedding, freedom. Beyond all this, through Romeo and Juliet, I aim to convey many new and relevant emotions with contemporary, exciting music."
Production Scale
The Szeged performance captured on this DVD represents one of the largest-scale musical productions in Hungarian theatrical history. The open-air staging allowed for spectacular visual elements impossible to achieve in traditional theatre spaces, including expanded choreography, larger ensemble numbers, and more elaborate scenic design.
Star-Studded Cast
This recording features an all-star cast of Hungarian musical theatre, including Attila Dolhai and Dóra Szinetár in the title roles, who have gone on to become leading figures in Hungarian entertainment.
