These two pieces fit well together, whether it’s in one concert or in one recording, because of the similar musical style and treatment of similar subjects. Ein Heldenleben looks back on many of the pieces Strauss had written by then and, in one way or another, reminisces about his life: in fact there are direct quotations from most of his prior tone poems, including Don Juan itself.
