Overview
Remember the Titans is set in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1971 — the year T.C. Williams High School was forcibly integrated, its previously all-white football team merged with the Black players from the school it absorbed. The film follows what happens when the longtime white head coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton) is displaced by the newly appointed Black head coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington), and the two men have to find a way to work together while their players do the same.
Director Boaz Yakin and writer Gregory Allen Howard keep the film grounded in the specific social pressure of the moment — early practice camp at Gettysburg, where Boone's brutal conditioning either breaks the team apart or forges it — while Trevor Rabin's score and the period soundtrack give it energy. Washington plays authority and vulnerability in the same register; Patton matches him. The supporting cast of players, largely unknown at the time, is uniformly strong.
This Hungarian InterCom edition is the uncut Extra Version, running nearly 109 minutes in 2.35:1 widescreen on a DVD9 disc, with Hungarian Dolby Surround alongside the English 5.1 track and a solid extras package.
Interesting Facts
- The film is based on the true story of the 1971 T.C. Williams High School Titans, who went undefeated that season under Herman Boone's coaching.
- Herman Boone and Bill Yoast were both consultants on the production.
- Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, who had come off a string of massive action hits — Remember the Titans showed a quieter, character-led side of his producing instincts.
- The film grossed over $115 million in the US, becoming one of the most commercially successful sports dramas of the decade.
- Denzel Washington prepared for the role by spending time with the real Herman Boone and studying his manner and coaching style.
- The Gettysburg training camp sequence, where Boone wakes the team at 3 a.m. for a run to the battlefield, was based on a real event.
