Overview
Sylvia Sass was one of the most compelling dramatic sopranos of the late twentieth century - a voice that earned standing ovations at the Vienna State Opera, Covent Garden, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. This four-disc Reader's Digest box set, released in 2009, draws together the full arc of her recorded career: operatic masterworks, nineteenth-century bel canto, Verdi heroines, and Hungarian folk songs and operetta favorites.
The first disc opens with opera and concert arias performed at the highest level - Stradella, Mozart, Wagner, Respighi, and Richard Strauss. The second shifts to the golden age of opera, with excerpts from Donizetti, Erkel, Gounod, Mascagni, and Cilea. Disc three is pure Verdi - I Lombardi, Ernani, Attila, Macbeth, Otello - with Sass inhabiting each of those difficult heroines with authority. The fourth disc opens the door to a warmer, more personal world: Hungarian folk songs, operetta, and popular classics by Kálmán, Lehár, and Millöcker.
Forty-nine tracks across four CDs. This is not a greatest-hits compilation assembled around a single era. It is a portrait.
Interesting Facts
- Sylvia Sass made her international debut at the Vienna State Opera in 1976 and quickly established herself as one of the leading Verdi and Puccini sopranos of her generation.
- She was personally selected by Georg Solti to record Tosca for Decca in 1977 - a recording that brought her global attention overnight.
- Her interpretations of Verdi's dramatic heroines, particularly Lady Macbeth and Abigaille in Nabucco, were praised by critics for their psychological depth as much as their vocal power.
- Sass was born in Győr, Hungary in 1951 and trained at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest - the same institution that shaped Bartók, Kodály, and Solti.
- The recordings on this set were originally made for Hungaroton Records, the Hungarian state label, and were licensed to Reader's Digest for this 2009 compilation release.
- Despite an international career spanning major houses on three continents, Sass maintained a deep connection to Hungarian repertoire - operetta, folk songs, and the works of Erkel remain central to her legacy in Hungary.
