Overview

The Cold War never quite died — it just waited. The Sum of All Fears drops a young Jack Ryan into a nightmare that escalates from intelligence chatter to a nuclear blast on American soil, and Ben Affleck plays the analyst who sees it coming before anyone with the power to stop it will listen.

Morgan Freeman anchors the film as CIA director William Cabot, the mentor who pulls Ryan out of the archives and into the field. When renegade scientists and a shadowy nationalist plot push the U.S. and Russia toward war, the two race a clock that most of Washington doesn't know is ticking.

Phil Alden Robinson directs this Tom Clancy adaptation as a procedural thriller with real dread underneath it — the centrepiece catastrophe is one of the most genuinely unsettling sequences in the genre. Jerry Goldsmith's score adds weight, and a deep supporting bench (James Cromwell, Liev Schreiber, Alan Bates) keeps every scene grounded. This Hungarian Special Edition carries both Hungarian and English audio.

Interesting Facts

  • This was the fourth Jack Ryan film, recasting the role younger to reboot the timeline — Affleck followed Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford.
  • Liev Schreiber plays field operative John Clark, a fan-favourite Clancy character who nearly got his own spin-off.
  • Composer Jerry Goldsmith earned a Grammy nomination for the score; the vocal theme features mezzo-soprano performance over his orchestration.
  • Tom Clancy served as an executive producer and reportedly clashed with the production over changes from his novel.
  • Author Lawrence Wright aside, Clancy's research-heavy style made the film's nuclear-terror plot feel uncomfortably plausible to many viewers on release.
