Overview

Invocatio Musicalis takes the melodies of Hungarian Reformed hymns and reworks them as instrumental progressive rock — flute out front, electric guitars, bass, and full drum kit underneath. The result sits in the same world as classic prog acts that drew on church and folk material, turning centuries-old hymn tunes into extended, atmospheric instrumentals.

This live album captures the band on stage, mostly recorded in 2014 at venues in Szentendre and Budapest. Alongside the hymn arrangements — numbered from the Hungarian Reformed hymnal — sit original pieces with telling titles like "Greg Lake nyomdokain" (In Greg Lake's footsteps) and "Kelta parafrázis" (Celtic paraphrase), nodding to the band's rock and folk roots. Three unplugged bonus tracks recorded for their videos round out the set.

Flautist Attila Kollár is a familiar name from the Hungarian prog scene, and his playing gives the music its distinctive voice. Released on Periferic Records in 2015 — a fascinating meeting of sacred melody and progressive rock. Sealed and ready.

Interesting Facts

  • The repertoire is built largely from numbered hymns of the Hungarian Reformed (Calvinist) hymnal, reimagined as instrumental rock.
  • Flautist Attila Kollár is well known in Hungarian progressive rock circles, lending the band a strong link to that tradition.
  • One original track is titled "Greg Lake nyomdokain" ("In Greg Lake's Footsteps"), a tribute to the Emerson, Lake & Palmer bassist and singer.
  • The live concert tracks were captured at the Reformed Grammar School chapel in Szentendre in September 2014, among other venues.
  • Three bonus tracks are unplugged audio recordings originally made for the band's videos.
