Overview

The First Day is the meeting of two singular British musicians — David Sylvian, the voice and aesthetic mind of Japan, and Robert Fripp, the guitarist and architect of King Crimson. Released in 1993, it's harder and more physical than most of Sylvian's solo work, driven by Fripp's guitar and a muscular rhythm section.

The songs swing between propulsive rock and long, exploratory pieces. "God's Monkey" and "Jean the Birdman" are tight and direct; "20th Century Dreaming" and the closing "Bringing Down the Light" stretch out into something more hypnotic and abstract. Sylvian's voice sits over Fripp's textures with a strange, contemplative calm.

This edition arrives on Fripp's own Discipline Global Mobile through Panegyric, the home for his catalogue — a 2014 reissue that keeps the original seven-track program intact. A key document of 1990s art rock, sealed and ready.

Interesting Facts

  • The collaboration grew out of Fripp inviting Sylvian to front a reformed King Crimson; instead the two made this album together.
  • The lineup features Trey Gunn on Chapman Stick and Jerry Marotta on drums, players associated with Fripp's wider circle.
  • The album was followed by a live document, "Damage," recorded on the supporting tour.
  • Discipline Global Mobile was founded by Robert Fripp as an artist-controlled label, an ethos reflected in the pointed copyright note printed on the release.
  • "Jean the Birdman" was released as a single and remains one of the best-known tracks from Sylvian's collaborative work.
