Nineteenth Century Hungarian Painting
The book covers one of the most interesting periods of Hungarian painting. It was in the 19th century that Hungarian national art came into being and joined the mainstream of uni- versal art. In this century Hungary produced world-famous painters, such as Mibdly Munkdery, who was one of the most celebrated painters of the 1880's, and Pal Szinyei Merse who in the 1870's was already experimenting with diffused lighting and occupied with the problem of the complexity, problems that were taken up by the greatest European artists of the time. His "Picnic in May" (1873) is one of the gems of Hungarian fine arts. The 48 colour plates are a representative selection from the various trends in 19th-century Hungarian painting, compris ing works by the following artists:
