Overview
This is a smart pairing: two violin concertos, both in D major, both opus 35, separated by half a century and a world of style. Laurent Korcia plays Korngold's lush, cinematic concerto alongside Tchaikovsky's beloved warhorse, with Jean-Jacques Kantorow conducting the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège.
Korngold's concerto, drawn partly from his Hollywood film scores, is all sweep and golden melody — a late-Romantic showpiece that rewards a player with real tone. Korcia has exactly that, helped by the 1719 "Le Zahn" Stradivarius he plays here. The Tchaikovsky needs no introduction: brilliant, lyrical, and one of the summits of the violin repertoire.
Released on the French label Naïve in 2011, the disc shows Korcia as a violinist of charisma and warmth, and makes a persuasive case for hearing the Korngold as the equal of its more famous companion. Sealed and ready.
