Overview

A viola player taking on the Arpeggione Sonata, then handing the stage to a soprano — that's the shape of this naïve release, and it works beautifully. Antoine Tamestit plays the D821 sonata on viola rather than the long-extinct arpeggione Schubert wrote it for, and the instrument's warmer, darker voice suits the music's mix of lyricism and quiet melancholy.

The second half turns to song. Sandrine Piau brings eight Lieder, including three from Schwanengesang and the great "Der Hirt auf dem Felsen," where her soprano, Tamestit's viola, and Markus Hadulla's piano weave together in one of Schubert's most expansive late pieces.

It's a thoughtfully built program — instrumental and vocal Schubert under one roof, recorded with the clean, unfussy sound naïve is known for. Released in 2009, total playing time around 58 minutes.

Interesting Facts

  • The arpeggione was a bowed, six-string guitar-shaped instrument invented around 1823; it fell out of use within a decade, leaving Schubert's D821 as its only lasting legacy — now played on cello or viola.
  • Antoine Tamestit is one of the leading violists of his generation, performing on a 1672 Stradivarius viola, one of only a handful that survive.
  • Sandrine Piau built her reputation in Baroque repertoire before becoming a celebrated interpreter of German Lieder and French song.
  • "Der Hirt auf dem Felsen" (D965) was one of the last works Schubert completed, written months before his death in 1828, and scored unusually for voice, clarinet, and piano — here adapted with viola.
  • Several of the songs come from Schwanengesang, the collection of Schubert's final Lieder published posthumously.
