Released by Decca, this spectacular live 2-DVD box set captures the monumental production from the Salzburg Festival. Based on a tale from Homer's Odyssey, the ancient island of Crete serves as the dramatic setting for an intense narrative of young love thwarted, fierce political and romantic rivalry, and a timely deus ex machina to bring order to chaos. To this traditional opera seria framework, Mozart brings prodigiously inventive and highly dramatic orchestrations.

This critically acclaimed production is staged by the visionary duo Ursel and Karl-Ernst Herrmann, who bring a striking, modern-day minimalist aesthetic to the ancient Greek myth through spacious, stark set designs and sharp contemporary costumes. Superb tenor Ramón Vargas delivers a distinguished, commanding performance as Idomeneo, King of Crete, heading an extraordinary international cast of soloists that includes Magdalena Kožená's impassioned Idamante, Ekaterina Siurina's delicate Ilia, and Anja Harteros's legendary, explosive interpretation of Elettra.
