Overview

Eine kleine Nachtmusik is one of those pieces so ubiquitous it's easy to forget how genuinely well-constructed it is — four tight, perfectly balanced movements that Mozart apparently wrote quickly and without any known commission, possibly just for his own satisfaction. This disc puts it in useful context alongside two less familiar serenades. The Serenata Notturna is scored unusually, with a solo string quartet set against a small orchestra including timpani, giving it a concerto-like dialogue quality quite different from the more homogeneous string writing of the famous K.525. The Lodron Night Music No. 1, meanwhile, was written for the name-day celebrations of Countess Antonia Lodron, a family with close ties to the Mozarts in Salzburg — genuine occasional music, but constructed with real craft. The Capella Istropolitana under Wolfgang Sobotka bring a light, well-balanced chamber-orchestra sound throughout, letting Eine kleine Nachtmusik breathe without over-familiarity setting in. Recorded at the Slovak Philharmonic's concert hall, this is a genuinely useful way to hear Mozart's most famous serenade properly contextualized among its lesser-known siblings.

Interesting Facts

  • Eine kleine Nachtmusik was composed without any known commission or occasion, one of the few Mozart works written seemingly for its own sake.
  • The Serenata Notturna features an unusual scoring for solo string quartet plus timpani set against a small orchestra, creating a concerto-like contrast within a single work.
  • Lodron Night Music No. 1 was composed for the name-day celebrations of Countess Antonia Lodron, whose family was closely connected to the Mozarts in Salzburg.
  • Mozart's original manuscript of Eine kleine Nachtmusik included a fifth movement (a second minuet) that was later lost, meaning the familiar four-movement version is technically incomplete.
  • This recording was made at the Concert Hall of the Slovak Philharmonic, among Naxos's earliest sessions with the Capella Istropolitana ensemble.
