This Blu-ray release captures a special performance of Mozart's "Die Zauberflöte" (The Magic Flute) from the 2012 Salzburg Festival. This production holds special significance as it was created during the later part of Nikolaus Harnoncourt's artistic career. According to Herzog's interpretation, this conflict is not simply a battle between good and evil, but a collision of two fundamental and equally important aspects of human existence. The visual world of the production, created by set and costume designer Mathis Neidhardt, is restrained and elegant, yet filled with symbolic meanings. The direction pays special attention to the emotional development of Pamina and Tamino, who must find balance between the two worlds before they can find each other.
