Overview

This is the founding volume of MTV's Rock Lexikon series — and it is the volume that matters most. Two men, two bands, one shared history. Benkő László and Szörényi Levente both started in the Hungarian beat era of the 1960s. Both wrote their own chapters in the country's musical history. Both stayed beloved through every decade that followed.

The documentary structure is dual portrait. Benkő László talks about Omega — how the band formed, how they cracked the European charts, what it was like to play a Wenceslas Square concert in Prague just two years after the 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. Szörényi Levente talks about Illés — about being known as "the little Buddy Holly" in his youth, about insisting on singing in Hungarian when everyone wanted them to sing in English, about everything that came after. Rare archival footage from the MTV vaults — material most viewers will never have seen — fills the gaps between interviews.

Here is the thing about this signed copy. Benkő László passed away in January 2020 at the age of 76. A new copy with his signature on it can no longer be created. The signature on this cover is from a man who, for nearly six decades, defined how Hungarian rock sounded on the keyboards.

The closing line of the documentary, as the back cover quietly notes, sticks in the head whether you want it to or not: "Igen, jött egy gyöngyhajú lány…"

Ez az MTV Rock Lexikon sorozatának alapító kötete — és ez az a kötet, amely a legfontosabb. Két férfi, két zenekar, egy közös történelem. Benkő László és Szörényi Levente mindketten a magyar beat-korszakból indultak az 1960-as években. Mindketten saját fejezeteket írtak az ország zenetörténetében. Mindketten szeretettek maradtak minden következő évtizedben.

A dokumentumfilm szerkezete kettős portré. Benkő László az Omegáról beszél — hogyan alakult a zenekar, hogyan kerültek fel az európai slágerlistákra, milyen volt egy prágai Vencel téri koncertet adni mindössze két évvel az 1968-as csehszlovák bevonulás után. Szörényi Levente az Illésről beszél — arról, hogy fiatalkorában „kis Buddy Hollyként" emlegették, arról, hogy ragaszkodott a magyar nyelvű énekléshez, amikor mindenki azt akarta, hogy angolul énekeljen, és arról, ami azután következett. Az MTV-archívumokból származó ritka felvételek — olyan anyagok, amelyeket a legtöbb néző soha nem látott — töltik ki az interjúk közti hézagokat.

Interesting Facts

The Rock Lexikon series was produced by Hungarian state television (MTV) as a comprehensive documentary archive of the country's most important rock musicians. Volume 1, featured on this DVD, focuses on the two beat-era pillars: Benkő László (born 1943, died 2020), founding member and keyboardist of Omega from 1962, and Szörényi Levente (born 1945), lead vocalist of Illés and later co-composer of the legendary 1983 rock opera István, a király with Bródy János. The documentary contains particularly rare footage of Omega's 1970 concert in Prague's Wenceslas Square — a deeply symbolic event since it took place only two years after Warsaw Pact troops, including Hungarian forces, had occupied Czechoslovakia during the Prague Spring crackdown. The Buddy Holly comparison made for young Szörényi Levente was widely used in 1960s Hungarian press, referring both to his musical style and his glasses-wearing image. Both featured artists were awarded the Kossuth Prize, Hungary's highest cultural honor: Szörényi in 2007, Benkő in 2017. The series continued with Volume 2 (Bergendy & Zalatnay) and Volume 3 (Charlie & Zorán), trailers for both included as extras on this disc.

A Rock Lexikon sorozatot a Magyar Televízió (MTV) készítette mint az ország legfontosabb rockzenészeinek átfogó dokumentumfilm-archívumát. Az 1. kötet, amely ezen a DVD-n szerepel, a beat-korszak két pillérére összpontosít: Benkő László (1943–2020), az Omega 1962 óta alapító tagja és billentyűse, valamint Szörényi Levente (sz. 1945), az Illés énekese és a legendás 1983-as István, a király rockopera Bródy Jánossal közös társszerzője. A dokumentumfilm különösen ritka felvételeket tartalmaz az Omega 1970-es prágai Vencel téri koncertjéről — mélyen szimbolikus esemény, mivel mindössze két évvel azután került rá sor, hogy a Varsói Szerződés csapatai, köztük magyar erők, megszállták Csehszlovákiát a prágai tavasz leverésekor.
