Overview

A Dunai Hajós ("The Danube Pilot") is a 1975 Hungarian television film adapted from Jules Verne's late novel about a fisherman whose quiet life on the river hides a far larger story. Mr. Borus — really Ladko — wins the fishing contest at Sigmaringen, then turns his prize into a wager: to sail the length of the Danube all the way to the Black Sea, living only on what he catches.

The journey is a cover. The money and weapons he carries are meant for Bulgarian patriots fighting for independence, and an Austro-Hungarian Monarchy policeman named Jäger attaches himself to the trip — suspicious, and not without reason.

It's a period adventure with a strong cast of Hungarian screen names: Koncz Gábor and Agárdi Gábor lead, alongside Bujtor István, Madaras József, Kállai Ferenc, Latinovits Zoltán, and Mensáros Magdolna. The MOKÉP edition runs 111 minutes in the original Hungarian, drawn from the Magyar Televízió archive, and arrives factory sealed in its original shrink-wrap.

Interesting Facts

  • The film is based on Jules Verne's novel Le Pilote du Danube (1908), one of his last works, published after his death.
  • Latinovits Zoltán, one of the most celebrated Hungarian actors of the 20th century, appears in the cast — among his final screen roles before his death in 1976.
  • Bujtor István, here in a supporting part, later became a household name in Hungary as the star of the Ötvös Csöpi detective films.
  • The production was assembled from the holdings of the Magyar Televízió (MTV) archive and released on DVD by MOKÉP.
  • The disc carries the green "viewable regardless of age limit" classification mark, making it family-friendly viewing.
  • Extras include filmographies for Agárdi Gábor, Bujtor István, and Koncz Gábor, plus a recommendation trailer for Beszterce ostroma.
