Overview

"Mary Poppins" is Walt Disney's beloved masterpiece celebrating its 40th anniversary with this digitally restored 2-disc special edition. Julie Andrews stars in her Oscar-winning role as the world's most extraordinary nanny who arrives on the East Wind at the troubled Banks household in Edwardian London. With her magical carpet bag and talking parrot umbrella, she brings not only discipline but adventure and imagination into the lives of the Banks children, Jane and Michael. Through wonderful songs, impossible feats, and unforgettable characters—including the multi-talented chimney sweep Bert (Dick Van Dyke)—Mary Poppins teaches the rigid banker Mr. Banks and his suffragette wife Winifred the true value of family. This 5-time Academy Award-winning film combines live-action with groundbreaking animation sequences to create a timeless classic that remains as fresh and enchanting today as when Walt Disney first presented it to the world in 1964.

Interesting Facts

Academy Award Success:

"Mary Poppins" was nominated for 13 Academy Awards—the most for any Disney film during Walt Disney's lifetime—and won five Oscars: Best Actress (Julie Andrews), Best Film Editing, Best Original Music Score, Best Original Song ("Chim Chim Cher-ee"), and Best Visual Effects. The film was also nominated for Best Picture, which was a significant achievement for a family film at that time.

Julie Andrews' Film Debut:

"Mary Poppins" marked Julie Andrews' first appearance in a feature film, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Ironically, Andrews was available for the role because she had been passed over for the film adaptation of "My Fair Lady" (despite having played Eliza Doolittle on Broadway), with the role going to Audrey Hepburn instead.

Groundbreaking Special Effects:

The film pioneered several technical achievements, most notably the seamless combination of live-action and animation in sequences like "Jolly Holiday." The special effects team developed new techniques for the flying sequences and magical moments that were revolutionary for the time and earned the film its Visual Effects Oscar.

The Sherman Brothers' Iconic Music:

Brothers Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman composed the film's unforgettable score, which includes classics like "A Spoonful of Sugar," "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," "Chim Chim Cher-ee," and "Let's Go Fly a Kite." The Sherman Brothers would go on to compose music for many other Disney classics, but "Mary Poppins" remains perhaps their most celebrated work.
