Overview

This is Zubin Mehta on home turf — the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Florence orchestra he's been bound to for decades — in a program of Russian color and spectacle, captured live. Rimsky-Korsakov's Shéhérazade anchors the disc: four big symphonic tableaux from the Arabian Nights, with the solo violin standing in for the storytelling Scheherazade herself, here played by Yehezkel Yerushalmi.

The Capriccio espagnol follows, all Spanish dance rhythms and orchestral show, and then two darker, weightier pieces — the brooding prelude to Mussorgsky's Khovanshchina and the Polovtsian Dances from Borodin's Prince Igor, where the chorus joins in.

Maggio Live is the orchestra's own archive label, drawing on its concert tapes. These performances come from two different Florence concerts — the Russian orchestral showpieces from 2010, the Borodin from a 1994 evening — and the booklet carries English text. Nearly 78 minutes of music, conducted by one of the great podium veterans.

Interesting Facts

  • Zubin Mehta has been honored as honorary conductor for life by the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, with which he has worked since the 1980s.
  • Rimsky-Korsakov's Shéhérazade (1888) gives the recurring violin solo to the figure of the storyteller, threading her "voice" through all four movements.
  • The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, founded in 1933, is one of the oldest music festivals in Europe and the first in Italy.
  • Borodin never completed Prince Igor; the Polovtsian Dances were among the sections finished and orchestrated with the help of Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov after his death.
  • The recordings here span sixteen years apart — the Rimsky-Korsakov and Mussorgsky from 2010, the Borodin from a 1994 concert — both at Florence's Teatro Comunale.
