English Summary:

The Mole (in the Czech original called Krtek, or, for little mole, Krteček) is an animated character in a series of cartoons, created by Czech animator Zdeněk Miler. The premiere of the first short film with the Mole was on Venice Film Festival in 1957. Since its inception, the cartoon won itself an enormous popularity in many Central European countries, as well as India, China, Kazakhstan, Croatia, Finland, Russia, Ukraine, Iraq and Japan.

Krtek was first seen in 1956 in Prague, when Miler wanted to create a children's cartoon about how flax is processed. He wanted a strong Disney influence to the cartoon by choosing an animal for the leading role, and decided to pick a mole after stumbling over a molehill during a walk. The first film called "Jak krtek ke kalhotkám přišel" ("How the mole got his trousers") had premiere on Venice Film Festival in 1957, where it was awarded two Golden Lions. Production for further episodes started in 1963 and since then, around 50 episodes have been created.

The first episode of the cartoon was narrated, but Miler wanted the cartoon to be understood in every country of the world, so he decided to use his daughters as voice actors, reducing the speech to short non-figurative exclamations in order to express the mole's feelings and world perception. They also became the bottleneck of the creation process as they were the ones who got to see the whole film first, thus Miler was able to decide whether the message of the movie was able to get to children or not.

A Kisvakond (eredeti cím: csehül Krtek vagy Krteček, szlovákul Krtko) 1957-től 2002-ig vetített csehszlovák televíziós rajzfilmsorozat, melynek megalkotója Zdeněk Miler cseh rajzfilmkészítő, a Barrandov stúdió egyik munkatársa. A tévéfilmsorozat gyártója a Krátký Film Praha nevű filmstúdió. Az animációs játékfilmsorozat zenéit Miloš Vacek, Vadim Petrov és Jirí Strohner szerezték. Műfaja mesefilmsorozat. A sorozatot Csehszlovákiában a Česká Televize vetítette, Magyarországon az M1, az M2 és a Duna sugározta, valamint az RTL Klub is adta a Kölyökklub című műsorblokkban.

Az akkor 33 éves rajzoló-animátor 1954 őszén kapta azt a feladatot, hogy tervezzen oktató és nevelő célzatú filmeket gyermekek számára. A lehetséges témák között szerepelt a textilipar és a ruhagyártás bemutatása. Miler nem akart szokványos propagandafilmet készíteni. Úgy gondolta, hogy jobb megoldás, ha egy szerethető filmszereplő kalandjai során ismerik meg a gyerekek a gyártási folyamatokat. Komolyan megküzdött a feladattal, alkotói válságából egy mára legendássá vált botlás segítette ki.Miler egy alkonyi séta alkalmával megbotlott egy vakondtúrásban – így született meg Kisvakond ötlete.

Kisvakond 1956-ban indult útjára, a helyes főhős sok kelet-európai országban hamar óriási népszerűségre tett szert, de Németországban, Ausztriában és Kínában is.

O krtkovi je volná série krátkých animovaných filmů pro děti výtvarníka Zdeňka Milera, která vznikala mezi lety 1957 až 2002. Hlavní postavou je kreslený krtek potýkající se mnohdy se světem lidí a zažívající různé příhody se svými zvířecími kamarády. Po smrti autora umožnila jeho vnučka vznik nových dílů s krtkem, koprodukční čínsko-český seriál se jmenuje Krtek a Panda.

Zdeněk Miler (21. února 1921, Kladno – 30. listopadu 2011, Nová Ves pod Pleší) byl český režisér a výtvarník animovaných filmů pro děti, autor oblíbené postavičky Krtečka.

Miler was born in Kladno just west of Prague, the capital of what was then Czechoslovakia. He became an animator partly because of the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. He took part in the demonstrations held consequent to death of Jan Opletal which led to the closing of universities and colleges. He escaped being sent to a concentration camp, and instead wound up working as an animator.

Miler enjoyed painting as a child. His hobby developed when he joined the national graphic school in Prague in 1942. He later studied at the College of Arts and Crafts (Uměleckoprůmyslová škola Praha). In 1948 he began work at the cartoon studio Baťa in Zlín. There he learned the important practical skills relating to film production specializing in animated films. After the second World War, he started work at the cartoon company Bratři v triku and worked first as draughtsman then author and director. He later became the head of the company.

In 2001, Miler announced that he would no longer be making more films, citing health reasons.
