Overview
Utóélet is a quietly absurd coming-of-age story about a young man who can't stop worrying — least of all about living up to his father, the village pastor. When the controlling old man dies of a heart attack before he can push his son into church life, Mózes feels something close to relief. Then his father's ghost shows up at the wake and refuses to leave, visible to no one but Mózes.
What follows is tender, funny and strange in equal measure. Mózes sets about trying to free himself from the haunting — with help from a spiritualist mechanic and the late pastor's assistant — in a film that balances real warmth against its black-comic premise. Director Zomborácz Virág, working from her own script, gives the whole thing a grounded, socio-realist texture that critics abroad and at home picked up on.
The film travelled widely on the festival circuit, winning Best Film at Valladolid and audience awards at Bergamo and Ceau, Cinema!, with acting prizes for its leads. For collectors of contemporary Hungarian cinema, this is a well-regarded recent title — and one of the rarer editions to carry full English subtitles.
